Commentary
There were six new wide releases this weekend. Six! That is obviously way too much. There is simply no space in the marketplace for six new releases to do really well. So coming into this weekend we knew that many of those would have disappointing weekend takes.
The news turned out be less bad than I was expecting tough. The only really ugly number was that of Pride. TMNT did quite well, considering that it's supposedly had a small budget for an animation and that the TMNT franchise had been basically dead for the last ten years or so. The rest of the openings all represented modest failures. Reign Over Me is the one that could possibly have some legs and pull itself into the success territory. This film won't get near the usual take of an Adam Sandler comedy, but it is a serious drama, so that was never expected anyway.
Considering the number of new films, the drops of the holdovers were quite impressive. 300 managed to stay in second place, dropping just 37.6% to take in over $20 million this weekend. These kind of numbers pretty much guarantee that 300 will earn over $210 million, showing that my prediction that it would have no legs was completely wrong. Wild Hogs once again had the smallest decline in the top ten and cemented itself as the number 2 movie of the year so far. Premonition is doing well, for a Sandra Bullock movie with a modest budget. Dead Silence, whoever, is petering out fast, and probably won't make it to $20 million. SAW this one isn't.
