January 19th, 2007 · No Comments

Slim pickings in terms of new releases and expansions this week.

The Hitcher

The Players: Sophia Bush, Sean Bean and newcomer director Dave Meyers
The Story: Pretty much what the title implies. Couple picks up a hitcher who ends up terrorizing them.
Rotten Tomatoes: Not screened for critics.
Trailer

Yes, yet another remake that doesn't add much to the original. They will stop being made when people stop paying to see them.

Pan's Labyrinth (expanding)

The Players: Director/Writer Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Blade 2, The Devil's Backbone)
The Story: A young girl moves with her pregnant mother to live next to her stepfather, who is a Captain of the Spanish army. The film is set in post civil war Spain, a time when there was still much unrest, and it contrasts the horrors of the lingering war with a fable world of fauns and sprites in which the girl enters.
Rotten Tomatoes: 96% fresh. The film also secured the 5th place in this mega list of critics top tens. So yeah, it's well liked by the critics.
Trailer

A beautiful film from Guillermo del Toro. Not really for the kids though, as some of the violence is very graphic. But a wonderful treat for adults.
