Big On DVD

January 25th, 2007 · No Comments

I have mentioned this before, but looking at the list of top selling and top rented DVDs amuses me because you can almost always find some silly film that did poorly on theatrical raking in some serious cash. This last week was no different. The Gridiron Gang, one of about a hundred football movies to come out last year, topped the sales charts according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. And Employee of the Month, the Jessica Simpson/Dane Cook vehicle, took second place. On rentals the order was reversed.

We don't know exactly how many copies were sold or rented of these movies. Unlike what happens with the box office numbers, rentals and purchases are not reported by the studios themselves, so we have to rely on statistical methods that are not completely accurate. However, it's safe to say that these two movies, which grossed respectively $38.4 million and $28.4 on theatrical, will earn more from DVDs than they did from people going to see the films on a big screen. Possibly a lot more.
