So, have you seen the trailer for the Frank Miller inspired 300 yet? Of course you have, but it’s always worth seeing it again.
I have to say I’m fairly impressed by it. And I get more impressed the more I see it (it’s been about ten times so far). The visuals look pretty stunning, don’t they? And the story just might turn out to be interesting.
Zack Snyder did good with his first film as a director, the Dawn Of The Dead remake. One of the rare recent horror remakes that tries to go some place different than the original, in this case turning what was a mostly psychological thriller into a much more action packed movie with fast zombies and exciting chase scenes. So, even tough the new film doesn’t quite compare to the original (which is a great, great movie by the way) it is still a worthy movie on its own. And 300 looks like it might be similarly worthy.
Two concerns: One, that the highly stylised visuals might be annoying when you are exposed to them for a long time, or that they might make the action seem unreal and thus less exciting. Two, that the characters might not be very relatable. I actually no longer think any of those two are likely, but they are the biggest possible reasons for this film not working that I can see right now.
And since we are talking about Zack Snyder I feel I should mention that he is attached to direct the Watchmen adaptation, and that I still think that making a movie out of Watchmen is a very bad idea.
